Reduce Sets

Use this dialog to reduce sets. The function analyzes conventional observations and estimates average (mean) sets per station from the original measurements where multiple sets are recorded.

Where to find the dialog?

On the land surveying toolset in the terrain model drawing, select the Reduce Sets... icon.

About the function

The function is located at the far left of the toolbox to indicate that this should be done before starting analysis and calculations.

When you start the averaging process, you get three options. The system automatically selects the most relevant option based on whether stations have already been averaged.

Reduce all sets

Select this option if you want to average all stations and sets from the beginning.

  • Default selection when no stations have been averaged previously.
  • All stations are averaged regardless of previous processing.

Reduce all sets only for stations not yet averaged

Select this option to average only new or unprocessed measurements.

  • Default selection if one or more stations have already been averaged.
  • Previously averaged sets are retained unchanged.
  • Only new stations are processed.

This option is useful when you import additional data and do not want to run the entire process again.

Reset sets for all averaged stations

Select this option if you want to start the averaging process completely from scratch.

  • All averaged sets are reset, and the entire dataset is averaged from the beginning.
  • The option is disabled if no stations have been averaged yet.

Note

The function is designed to ensure that controlled and approved work is not overwritten when importing new data. The system automatically selects the most likely option based on the status of previous averaging, but you can override the selection if needed.

Note

You can choose to average sets without zero-reducing to the first point. This is a setting in the application layer under the analysis parameters tab.

The context menu for the station list (before calculation) also has an option to reset averaging for selected stations.

This is useful when you only want to re-average specific stations.

The menu option is only active if the selected stations have the Average ID field set. You will then be asked if you want to reset before the process starts.

Measurement setup requirements

To reduce sets, the program requires a structure in the measurement setup where each station is a half set, and each setup is measured in the same structure. The program supports the following measurement setups:

  • ABC-ABC: The entire round is measured in the first telescope position, then the round is measured again in the same order in the second telescope position.

  • ABC-CBA: The entire round is measured in the first telescope position, then the round is measured backward in the second telescope position.

  • AABBCC-AABBCC: All points in the round are measured twice, first in the first telescope position and then in the second telescope position.

  • AABBCC-CCBBAA: All points in the round are measured twice in the first and second telescope positions, then the round is repeated backward.

Potential issues

When splitting set measurements, the program will try to interpret the measurement setup into one of the mentioned structures. If there is a break in the structure, for example, if the same point is measured twice in the same telescope position, the split will fail, and you may have trouble reducing sets.
