Introduction¶
The SurfaceMaker module (surface modeling) in Gemini Terrain+ is used for importing, processing, and modeling scanned point datasets. The module is particularly developed for projects where point clouds and detailed terrain data form a central basis - for example in documentation and analysis of road cuts, tunnels, rock exposures, quarries, and structures.
Surface modeling extends the functionality of Gemini Terrain+ with tools for point cloud cleaning, point reduction, manual and line-based editing, as well as triangulation and establishment of terrain models. The module also supports the processing of geometry that cannot be adequately described by traditional terrain models, such as overhanging surfaces, niches, rock walls, and vertical structures.
Typical data sources are laser scanning and photogrammetry. With photogrammetry, drones are most often used for image capture, where the images are then processed into dense point clouds. Data can be imported from common point cloud formats such as LAS, LAZ, PTS, and XYZ.
