Introduction to NVDB in Gemini Connected

Background

Contractors are required to deliver data from road projects to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) for registration in NVDB. Datafangst is a web-based system for submission, control, and editing of all road objects constructed (or modified) during a road construction project.

Integration with Gemini Connected

Gemini Terrain supports submitting road objects directly via the Datafangst API.

Traditionally, data has been delivered in SOSI format, and this will still be possible for those who do not use Gemini Connected.

About the integration

Gemini Connected can be connected to Statens vegvesen's Datafangst solution via an API. The connection is set up in Gemini Connected, while the actual delivery of data is performed from Gemini Terrain.

A company can have many Connected projects, and each project can have one or more connections to Datafangst.

To understand how this works, it is important to distinguish between two things:

  • The connection – is set up once per project and is shared by everyone in the project.
  • The access to deliver – is personal and controlled by each user's own token.

Terms

Term Explanation
Company / tenant The organization that owns the Connected projects.
Connected project A project in Connected with associated Gemini Terrain project(s).
Connection / integration The setup in Connected that points to a specific Datafangst project. Stored at the project level.
Token A personal key that identifies the user to Datafangst. Contains the national identity number.
Datafangst contract The project at Statens vegvesen that data is to be delivered to.

How it fits together

The connection is shared by the project

When a user in a Connected project creates a connection to Datafangst, the connection is stored at the project level. This means that:

  • The connection becomes visible to everyone who has access to the Connected project, both in Connected and in Gemini Terrain.
  • What is stored in the connection is only an ID for the relevant Datafangst project. This ID says nothing about who has access to deliver.

The connection therefore only needs to be set up once per project. The person who creates the connection does not grant access to others – it only makes the project available as a delivery target in the interface.

The access to deliver is personal

Even though the connection is visible to everyone in the project, that does not mean everyone can deliver. Each user must have access to the relevant Datafangst project at Statens vegvesen.

This is controlled by the user's personal token:

  • The token is personal and tied to the user's national identity number, which is the key to Datafangst.
  • You are automatically prompted to enter your token when it is needed – whether you are working in Connected or starting from Gemini Terrain. You therefore do not need to go to a specific place to enter it in advance.
  • There is only one token per user. Since the token identifies a person via their national identity number, there is no point in using multiple tokens for the same person.

Once the token has been entered, the user sees the Datafangst projects they are a member of.

Note

A token is only valid for one month (30 days). When the token has expired, you are taken to a Connected page created specifically for entering a new token.

Datafangst controls what you can deliver

During the delivery itself, Datafangst performs an access check:

  • Datafangst verifies that the user has access to the relevant project.
  • If the user does not have access, the delivery is denied.

In other words, it is the token that determines access in Statens vegvesen's systems – not the connection in Connected, and not who created the connection.

What must each user do?

  1. Ensure access in Datafangst. You must be added to the relevant Datafangst project/contract at Statens vegvesen.
  2. Enter your own token when prompted. The token is personal and tied to your national identity number. You are asked to enter it when needed – whether you are in Connected or starting from Gemini Terrain.
  3. Select the connection in the project. The connection to the Datafangst project is already visible if someone in the project has set it up.
  4. Deliver data from Gemini Terrain. Datafangst checks your access during delivery and only lets through data to the projects you have access to.

Summary

  • A connection is set up once per Connected project and is visible to everyone in the project.
  • A visible connection is not the same as access to deliver.
  • Each user has their own personal token (one per user, tied to their national identity number) and is prompted to enter it when needed.
  • You see and can deliver only to the Datafangst projects you are a member of.
  • Datafangst (Statens vegvesen) decides at each delivery whether you have access, based on your token.
